Autumn ought to be the time of Pumpkin Spice Lattes and knitted scarves. But no, not so in LA. It's hot. Iced coffee hot.

NewFilmMakers September Screening

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles holds its September screening tonight of a dozen new short films at Sunset Gower Studios. There are pre- and post-receptions for each program, a filmmakers’ lounge, and audience Q&A sessions.  It's a fun way to see the studio campus, and support and network with new filmmakers.

Chocolate and Art Show Experience


This art experience is currently one of the largest underground art shows in the Los Angeles area! Free chocolate fondue, live music, art, nude body painting, and more.  KGB Studio is an ever-evolving creative space, a hidden gem located east of Chinatown. The Crispy Food Truck will be on hand.

Jazz at LACMA Presents Louis Van Taylor 


Saxophone and woodwind specialist Louis Van Taylor has been performing the world over. His career began with a twenty-year association with Ray Charles, followed by stints with the Gap Band, Kool and the Gang, Gerald Wilson, Jimmie and Jeannie Cheatham, Phil Ranelin, and many others. Van Taylor has taught at USC Jazz Studies Department for seven years and has also played for “Jazz in Schools” sponsored by the Los Angeles Jazz Society.

Pasadena Museum of California Art 10th Birthday Party


The Pasadena Museum of California Art is celebrating it’s 10th birthday with hands-on workshops for all ages, live performances, DJs and video art, food trucks, refreshments and a birthday cake.  Complimentary admission to the PMCA all day.  Performances by: El Haru Kuroi, We Break Cameras, Crazy Band, Regal Degal, and Dunes.  Food trucks on site will be Cool Haus, Nom Nom, Border Grill.

"Cartography of an Identity" Opening Reception 

Not that you ever need a reason to visit Bergamot - it's only one of the loveliest gallery rows anywhere.  But, if you want a reason, here it is: tonight, ADC & Building Bridges will present a solo exhibition, "Cartography of an Identity" by renowed artist Betsabee Romero curated by Laura Pomerantz and Sponsored by General Consulate of Mexico and Los Angeles.

Betsabee' Romero was born in Mexico City, where she currently lives and works.  Her work had been presented at the Paris Photo Salon, the Armory Show (NY), the ARCO fair (Madrid), the Havana Biennial, the Porto Alegre Biennial, the Poly/Graphic Triennial (Puerto Rico), Philagrafika (Philadelphia), Au bord du Paysage,(Farges, France), Art Grandeur Nature (La Courneuve, France), InSite 97 (San Diego-Tijuana), Kohj (Bangalore, Indian) and others.

SUCH a good idea, and a great example of LA's impressive capacity for outreach. Santa Monica  City’s Resource Recovery & Recycling Division hosts this Fall cleaning event.  Residents and local organizations pass along usable items to their neighbors, rather than sending them to the landfill.

Tarfest Music and Art Festival




LAUNCH LA presents this 10th annual fest at the La Brea Tar Pits featuring musical guests: The Makepeace Brothers, Steelwells, Blondefire, Helena & special guests.  On site will be the Lagunitas Biergarten, Wine Bar and Gourmet Food Trucks. Also experience live painting on 8ft canvases, large scale sculpture and installation art.

Giant Robot Biennale Opening Night Party




Giant Robot presents Misty Fog’s Combat Rock, an exhibition featuring Le Merde and Kiyoka Ikeda of kaiju toy company, Gargamel.

This exhibit will focus on Le Merde’s Misty Fog line of figures. New items will include: New T-shirt, New Beer Koozie, 4 new Coaster prints. 4 color art pieces and various customs of the new sculpts. Also scheduled is a new figure release.

Autumn Lights at Pershing Square



In this awesome event, Pershing Square will be transformed and illuminated as a diverse range of illuminated artworks and projections light up park architecture and surrounding buildings. This year’s highlights include some very large scale sculptural light installations, interactive light and performances, life black light paintings, photo booth and other visually interesting work.

Last year's event attracted over 15,000 people in one night to Pershing Square.  So, follow the light, and revel among works by an increasing number of well-known artists from around the world all working in the medium of light.

Barnsdall Outdoor Movies presents Edward Scissorhands



Johnny Depp at his best, even with his mouth sewn shut and scissors for hands. Bring a blanket and a picnic to enjoy this classic on the West Lawn of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, perched on the beautiful Olive Hill at Barnsdall Park.  All screenings are 17+ to attend and 21+ to drink.

Beer + Wine: City Sip will be offering three glasses of unique beer and wine selections. Come early, have a few drinks, and secure your spot in front of the screen.

Food: Bring a picnic! You are welcome to bring your own food, soft drinks, and a blanket; however, NO outside alcoholic beverages will be permitted.

Heirloom LA and Border Grill Truck will be serving up delicious food in the motor court outside of the Hollyhock house.

This is hands-down the scariest movie of all time. I kind of forgot how scary it was, and then watched it alone one night, when I caught it on tv. Mistake. Better to watch it in a giant crowd in a cemetery.
